For those of us who are gluten and/or dairy free, our diet is everything. We know exactly what we eat and drink; we read labels (always) and think about our diets daily. The other part of the equation that may be overlooked is fitness, which is just as important as diet.
Sedentary lifestyles are killing us. “Sitting is the new smoking,” says Marc T. Hamilton, a physiologist at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La. “These days we sit more than we sleep — an average of 10 hours a day — and it’s a serious health hazard.” Heavy sitters appear to be at a much greater risk for health complications, such as heart disease, diabetes, weight gain and early death.
If you have any question as to the effect of the personal computer and cable television boom in the 1990′s, take a look around the next time you are at the store, mall or movie theater. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 34 percent of adults are obese, more than double the percentage 30 years ago. The share of obese children tripled during that time, to 17 percent.
We have to start moving–quit sitting. Get active. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park away from the store and walk instead of fighting for the nearest parking space. Walk you dog every day. Take a stroll after supper with your family. Turn off the television and go outside. Play ball, soccer or tag with your kids. Just do something more today than you did yesterday.
